Shoal Lake N.W.M.P. Detachment

The North West Mounted Police were created on May 23rd, 1873.  A detachment of members were posted at the Hudson's Bay Company post at Fort Ellice (now St. Lazare).  Later during the "march west" a detachment broke away from the main body and traveled through Fort Ellice enroute to Fort Edmonton.  On the return trip to Lower Fort Garry, a detachment of members was established at the south end of Shoal Lake.  A permanent post was later built and served as a local headquarters for "D" division.  The post was later reduced to a mail stop in 1886.

The Manitoba Provincial Police assumed policing for the area, but in 1921 under provincial contract the Royal Canadian Mounted Police returned.  Shoal Lake is one of the longest serving Detachments in Canada.

In 2005 the museum is celebrating 130 years since the arrival of the North West Mounted Police to Shoal Lake.
